In recent years, as competition for overseas education has intensified, more parents have turned their attention to early-age study abroad. Among foreign private schools, British private schools, renowned for their long-standing educational history, comprehensive education systems, and high-quality teaching standards, have become the top choice for more Chinese parents.
However, it is well known that getting into Britain's top private schools is no easy feat, with a wide range of exams and selection processes. While each school has its own entrance exam, the widely recognized ones include UKiset, ISEB, and CAT4, in addition to the school's own admissions process.
Today we’re going to talk to you about the ISEB exam, which is administered by the British Private Schools Examinations Board for private secondary schools in the UK, and the ISEB exam for primary schools in the UK.
For many parents and students preparing to apply to UK private schools, ISEB is likely familiar. Its full name, The Independent Schools Examinations Board, represents the UK's most prestigious private school examination authority. ISEB brings together three leading organizations representing Britain's top private schools, enjoying exceptional prestige.
The Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference
The Girls' Schools Association
The Independent Association of Prep School
At present, more than 50 of the UK's top private schools use ISEB as their first entrance exam, such as Eton College, Harrow School, Westminster School, Winchester School and so on.

There are two ISEB exams used to apply for private schools in the UK: the first is the Common Pre test (abbreviated as CPT) preparatory exam, and the second is the Common Entrance Unified Examination. The latter is a unified examination for British local primary school students applying to top public schools, which does not have test centers in China. Today, we want to focus on the CPT preparatory exam.
ISEB Common Pre-Test
Age at examination
In most aristocratic private school applications, students are required to take the ISEB CPT, a pre-admission test designed to provide a universal and standardized measure of achievement, ability and potential.
Candidates for the ISEB CPT are aged between 10-12 years, i.e. when the student is in Year 6 or Year 7.

Form and content of the examination
The test is an adaptive (adaptive) online test, which determines a student's current ability and level according to the difficulty and correctness of the questions.
Simply put, the difficulty of a student's test questions changes with the accuracy rate of the student. If the accuracy rate is high, the difficulty of the subsequent questions will increase; if the accuracy rate is low, the questions will become easier.
The ISEB CPT exam examines students in the following four areas:
English
mathematics
Verbal reasoning
Non-verbal reasoning (non-verbal reasoning)
test time
Registration for ISEB CPT this year is:
September 5, 2022-June 16,2023;
The time to take the exam is:
October 3, 2022-June 30,2023
The test lasts about two and a half hours, which can be taken at one time or in separate sessions. It is mostly multiple choice questions. The subjects and time arrangements are as follows:

The extension time in the form refers to the time when students with special conditions such as reading disabilities or impaired vision can apply for an extension of each subject's test time by presenting relevant certificates to the school.
Examination criteria
There is no standard passing score for the ISEB CPT, as each school has different standards and uses the test scores in different ways. The score is adjusted according to age, the difficulty level achieved, and the accuracy of the answers.
Students are usually required to rank in the top 30-40% of all candidates.
Method of application
From September 2022, ISEB Pre-test will be registered by parents/guardians for their children on the ISEB website to apply for the test.

The exact time of the test depends on the school you apply to, and students can choose their own test location on the website.
ISEB has an official examination authority in China. When students register on the website, they can enter keywords such as "Shanghai" to select the appropriate test location.

Recently, Langsheng Education has officially applied to become one of the test centers in China for ISEB CPT pre-exam!
Exam Notes
The ISEB CPT score can be used to apply to multiple schools at the same time. Students can take the test only once per academic year, and the results will be available to any school in the target school that requires the ISEB CPT score.
Even if you take the test again, your first score will be used! Therefore, it is important to tell your target school when you will take the test and how well you will do.
In addition, parents and students do not know the exact results of the pre-exam, but the target school will inform the student at a specific time whether he or she has passed the exam and invite him or her to the next round of assessment.
The ISEB CPT is like a ticket to a prestigious school, and only after passing its examination can one enter the school's real assessment exam.
Use ISEB CPT to screen the list of students in private schools
