During this mid-term break, four faculty members accompanied 20 students from Concord College to Berlin, Germany - a city rich in history - as part of our 4-day interdisciplinary field trip.
Students studying GCSE or A-Level History or Modern Foreign Languages had the opportunity to visit and learn more about historical sites, monuments and events they had studied in their courses, such as Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, the Holocaust Memorial and the Berlin Wall.
Year 11 and A-Level German students got a chance to practice their language skills by interviewing some former residents of East Germany and asking about their living conditions in the past.
Other historical sites visited during the trip included the Stasi Prison, the Museum of East German Life, the famous TV Tower, and they even explored the Berlin Underground Tunnels which were used as air-raid shelters during the war.
Ms. Somerville, Head of Modern Foreign Languages (MFL), said, "It can be said that we learned about Berlin from all historical perspectives."
"The weather was nice throughout the trip - although it was a bit cold. This first joint trip organized by the History and Modern Foreign Languages departments at Concord was an academically enriching experience for all of us."
