School Overview
Caterham School is a co-educational boarding and day school that enrolls students aged 11 to 18. Founded in 1811 by Rev. John Townsend, the school was initially established to educate the sons of Congregational ministers. As the number of students grew, it moved to its current location in 1884. In 1981, it admitted female students to its Sixth Form (pre-university) program for the first time, and in 1995, it merged with the nearby girls’ school Eothen School to become the co-educational institution it is today.
Although the school boasts an impressive academic record and consistently ranks among the top schools in the UK each year, academic performance is not the sole measure of a student’s worth here. What matters more is helping each student achieve their personal best. The school’s educational philosophy is to provide a holistic education, enabling every student to fully unlock their potential both academically and in their areas of interest. Caterham believes that truly excellent education goes far beyond academic achievements—it also involves nurturing students’ passions, abilities, independent thinking, moral values, and confidence without arrogance.
Excellent Location
Caterham School is located in Surrey, southwest England, 20 miles south of London. Covering 200 acres, the campus is beautiful, surrounded by greenery, and fully equipped with facilities. It takes approximately 40 minutes by car to reach central London (with direct train and bus services available) and around 45 minutes by car to Heathrow Airport, making transportation very convenient.
Warm Campus Environment
The school has over 100 international students from more than 20 countries, creating a strong international atmosphere and a diverse cultural environment for all students. For boarding arrangements, housemasters/mistresses and teaching staff take good care of boarders’ daily lives and academic progress. Most teachers live near the school or on campus, allowing them to respond promptly to emergencies—providing peace of mind to parents living overseas.
Outstanding Academic Performance
Caterham School delivers exceptional academic results and is one of the top private boarding schools in the UK. Over the years, most of its students have gone on to study at leading British universities, such as the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, the University of Warwick, and the University of London.
2020 Results:
A-Level Results: Approximately two-thirds of grades were A*-A. 90% of students gained admission to top-tier universities, including 10 students admitted to the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. In the past few years, Caterham has sent over 70 students to Oxford and Cambridge.
GCSE Results: GCSE students also achieved excellent outcomes. The proportion of A* grades jumped from 50% the previous year to over 66.7%, and the proportion of A*-A grades reached as high as 80%.

Comprehensive School Facilities
To provide a better learning environment, Caterham School has invested heavily in upgrading its teaching facilities. These upgrades include the renovation of boarding houses, theaters, auditoriums, science buildings, art centers, dining halls, and classrooms for humanities subjects. It has also rebuilt the North Wing into a Sixth Form study center. Additionally, the school promotes tablet-based teaching, allowing each student to use digital tools for learning and enhancing interaction in classes.
The campus is fully equipped with cultural and recreational facilities, enabling students to participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities according to their interests. Traditionally, rugby, cricket, hockey, and rounders are popular sports at the school. Students are encouraged to take an active part in various sports activities, with dedicated coaches available for rugby, hockey, and cricket.
